Be it bumper to bumper traffic, or a ride to Grandma's house-- long car rides can do a number on any group of people, specifically families. The following is a list of some car games to consider playing with the whole gang!

The ABC Game is popular with a younger crowd, as it only requires knowledge of the alphabet. To play, each person in the car must try and complete the entire alphabet by identifying letters they see on license plates or billboards. When a letter is located, it is called out, and then eliminated. The first person to complete the entire alphabet wins.

A fun game that I especially enjoy is called "Word Justifying". One person in the car is the leader, and the others are the players. Each person thinks of a word. The players announce their words first, and then the leader announces his word at the end. The players then each take turns justifying why their word is most related to the leader's word. A winner is chosen, and the winner becomes the new leader.

When you are driving for a long period of time in the country or in other rural areas, it may be fun to play games involving the animals you see along the way. Assign points to each kind of animal. For instance, cows are worth two points, cats worth one, farm animals worth four or five, and so on. The first person in the car that reaches twenty is the winner.

Variations on twenty questions can always be fun, and occupy lots of time. Someone in the car chooses to be a person, place, or thing. Everyone else in the car can ask that person up to twenty 'yes or no' questions about it in the hopes of narrowing down their guesses enough to the point where they can figure it out! Whoever guesses correctly is the next person to be grilled.

Music games can be fun, and also test trivia knowledge in the car. Someone hums a part of a television show theme or score to a movie, and everyone else takes turns guessing which song it is. Whoever guesses correctly is next! For older or more enthusiastic players, try seeing who can recite all the lyrics to a song instead of guessing the title.

The Cow Game is another classic, and can be altered easily based on what's most fun. Ideally, the car is split into sides, and each side counts as many cows on their end as possible. Whenever a cemetery is passed, the side of the car it is on loses all their points and has to start over. Whoever has the most points by the end wins!

A musty odor is clearly not a desirable quality of for a house, it tends to give the impression of a dirty place and whilst it might actually not be noticeable to the owners it will almost certainly be so to visitors creating entirely the wrong sort of impression. Furthermore musty odors can also indicate the growth of mould which can trigger allergic reactions in some people and can be most discomforting.

Musty odors can come and go dependent upon the time of year and the weather. In the summer for example when the air conditioning is left running a great deal the air flow may eliminate the musty odor, however the cause may remain to come back and haunt you in the darker seasons.

Basements are often then source of such musty odors and the odor may have been caused by problems such as high humidity, cracks in walls allowing moisture in or merely from condensation. In order to prevent and stop the musty odor it is important to find the primary cause although bear in mind there may well be more than one factor causing the problem. Although the use of a home dehumidifier will allow you to alleviate the problem either partially or somewhat immediately, the following will enable you to track down the root cause of the problem most quickly and gain a complete elimination:

To prevent condensation on water pipes which can be a source of moisture particularly in winter months is to cover the water pipes with an insulated pipe wrap, these are relatively cheap and are an easy w3ay to prevent moisture dripping of the pipes and onto the floor.

Often house basements due to their lack of air flow build up high humidity levels and cause dampness, This causes the musty smell which can then rise throughout the house. Installation of a basement dehumidifier can prevent this problem from occurring and remove excess moisture, just make sure you have a drain available in order to take away the excess water gathered by the dehumidifier otherwise you may have to purchase a dehumidifier with a hose pipe and pump.

Check that any moisture suspected to be from condensation on pipes isn't actually from tiny holes. This problem can be solved most simply by attaching a pipe leak clamp if the hole is very small an epoxy compound can solve the problem with little problem, ask your local building supplier about both of them.

A more serious problem is that of weeping walls where moisture simply seeps through from the outside. The following process should help eliminate moisture coming from weeping walls: Ensure a dry forecast. Run a dehumidifier and fans to dry the walls.

Using a brush with strong stiff bristles scrub the weeping areas with trisodium phosphate, which can be found at most regular home improvement stores and will clean the surface for you, allow the scrubbed walls to dry again completely. Seal the walls with a latex concrete sealer following the manufacturers instructions. This procedure on its own should prevent all future weeping, if not then you'd better bring in a professional.

Cracks in walls are also another potential source of moisture and may occur even in very new houses. The cracks may be classed as active and likely to widen further or hopefully inactive and not likely to widen. Most cracks are not major and can be done with ready mixed concrete easily enough and a knife.

By following the above suggestions, focusing on your specific problems and with addition of a dehumidifier it is likely that you will be able to solve even the most persistent of household musty smells.

Line Lingo
Before you start, make sure you understand these line parts:
* Standing part: The side of the line that's attached to something (cleat, fender).
* Bitter end: Each end of a piece of line, or the area near the end of the line.
* Bite: A loop in a line.

Four ways to use a clove

1. Tie a fender to a lifeline.
2. Secure a coiled line to a rail.
3. Moor for a short stop at a marina dock.
4. Tie up overnight (with one added step--see below)

How to tie the five-second clove hitch

1. Hold the standing part in your non-dominant hand.
2. Drop 12" or more of the bitter end over the rail or lifeline
3. Pull the end under the rail or lifeline back to your right.
4. Roll the end over the top of the standing part to form as "X".
5. Pass the end under the rail and thread it under the left side of the "X".

Recently, a friend of mine installed a new graphics card in his computer. The rather steep price, $150, was justified by the remarkable improvement in performance. Game play had never been so good.

He loved everything about the new card, until he realized how hot it was getting inside his computer's case. Air coming from the fan port was far warmer than it had been. The monitoring software for his CPU hadn't gone off, but he figured it was only a matter of time. Even if it never reached this critical level, he knew excess heat would shorten the life of his system.

When he told his problem to me, I immediately suggested mounting another exhaust fan. The trouble was his case was one of the old style "beige boxes", that only had one port. We could do some case modding, cutting a new port in the chassis, but my friend balked at the idea. Wasn't there something else we could do?

There was a gadget I'd been wanting to try for a long time, one of those turbine fans. They fit in an unused PCI card slot. All you have to do is pop out a slot cover, and anchor them to the case with a screw, just like you would a PCI card.

Fortunately, the slot next to his graphics card was empty. That was just where the fan needed to be. We installed it, and booted up.

I have been looking forward to this home audit every since I put it on my schedule. You see, this house and I have a history. This will be the third go round with this house and so far I am batting 500. The first visited was to replace the rather large back deck and get it replaced before one of the kids fell threw the rotten boards. I figure the deck was a win. The second go round was the first home audit that left me scratching my head wondering how the heating duct system could leak so bad without being able to find where all the air was going. I figure that was a defeat. Now, here I am heading out for the third go round. I feel like an old Mohammad Ali fight. I have tried to stack the deck in my favor. I don't like losing. On this trip, I have invited another Energy Spy Detective named Jay to join me and I have an apprentice Energy Spy Detective named Nathan joining us on the hunt.

The day is beautiful and inspiring. Unusual to see the sky so blue and feel the weather so warm where the surf meets the sand. The highlight of the day will be lunch time when I plan to celebrate a home energy victory with a real, award winning bowl of clam chowder and some fresh buttered garlic bread. It will be worth the wait. Jay, Nathan, and I discuss the up coming challenge during the hour ride. We set forth a plan of attack and get our sleeves rolled up. I am not sure what Nathan is thinking, but he does mention food every once in a while.

The homeowner called me a few days after she had a visit from a gentleman from the power company. Like most of us, she had some concerns about the high electric bills. The power company guy did a duct blaster test and found that the ducts leaked so bad that he would not be able to provide any hands-on work to help out. The company auditor felt that all the duct leakage was to the inside of the house and, therefore, not really a concern. The news that a power company auditor had evaluated the home and left with his hands in the air had sparked my competitive nature. Yes, it's true, in the world of heating duct pressure testing, ducts are evaluated on their measured air leakage both to the outside of the house and to the inside of the house. If the ducts are leaking to the inside of the house, oh well, that is where you want the air anyway. If the ducts are leaking to the outside of the house, oh my goodness, now we are trying to heat or cool the great outdoors and that is very of hard on the pocketbook.

On arriving at the house, the first thing I did was ask to see the offending electric bill. I wanted to see what the total monthly killowatt hour usage was along with the daily average and I wanted to compare the current monthly usage with the usage a year earlier. The next thing I heard is something I simply do not understand. The owner said,"I don't have a bill, I throw them all away." Ouch! Folks, we need to make friends with our power bills and learn how to gather valuable, energy saving information from them. Read them like a good book. Instead of throwing them away, keep the old friends around a few years. Better yet, get the bills electronically and let the computer save them for you.

The three Energy Spy amigos take a quick tour of the home. It is a two story home with the front entrance halfway between the upstairs and the downstairs. Step in the front door and you have your choice - take the stairs down to the lower level - two bedrooms, bath, office and laundry. Take the stairs up to the main floor - two bedrooms, bath, kitchen, and living room. The home has a two car garage on the lower level. The office and one bedroom have been added by stealing room from the garage. The electric furnace is in a closet in the downstairs office. There is a return air register in the upstairs hallway ceiling and there is a smaller one at the bottom of the stairs in the downstairs hallway ceiling.

One thing that is unusual about the heating ducts in this home, along with the toys and cheerios, there are damper valves in the round metal heating ducts just inside the upstairs floor registers. Usually I only see damper valves in a commercial system. During my second and unsuccessful visit, one thing I did was open the damper valves by placing my hand down the heating ducts. The homeowner did not know the dampers were there. Opening the damper valve on one of the living room ducts increased the air flow from 625 cfm to 1200 cfm. ( I have a box with a flow meter attached, one of my energy spy gadgets)

Access to the attic is in the master bedroom closet. Nathan unloads the equipment and starts setting up the blower door. Jay grabs a screw driver and works his way into the furnace inclosure and I set up a ladder below the attic access. With the ladder in place, I invite Jay and Nathan to join me in the attic, I have a surprise for them that involves the attic insulation. Boy does that sound exciting or what! In this attic you will find the best case of trailblazing and fort construction that I have ever seen. The insulation is packed down in a system of little trails that look like the march of the penguins took place right here. Noticeable larger round depressions appear to be resting or sleeping areas. I can remember going snow skiing and traveling a road that had 6 feet of snow stacked on both sides of the roadway. I felt like I was traveling through a tunnel without a roof. Thats what the attic insulation looked like. Little tunnel roadways without a roof.

Investigation on the outside of the house, under the eves, reveals an area over the deck, next to a deck post, that has missing bird blocks. The family cat ( or cats ) had no problem climbing the post and entering the attic space. Let the trailblazing begin. We will see, later on, how this attic even provided a warm place for fort construction.

Nathan fires up the blower door and the monometer indicates an air infiltration measure of 2,800 cubic feet per minute. This is way too much. I would like to see a reading between 1000 and 1,400 cfm. Remember, too much air infiltration and we are heating or cooling the great outdoors. Too little air infiltration and the house might feel stale or muggy. We walk around the house while the blower door fan is on and look and feel for areas where air is entering the house. Back door and garage door need new weatherstripping - storage area under the stairs needs sealing off - attic access lid needs weatherstripping, etc. What is of particular interest to me is the amount of cool air coming down on my bald head from the return air register in the hallway ceiling. This is a very good indication that the duct system has a leak to the outside of the home. I think the Energy Spy Pros are on to something.

We get busy setting up for the duct blaster test. For this, all the heating registers are taped off and a fan is connected to the return air register in the ceiling of the hallway. We are going to blow air into the duct system, both supply and return ducts are included in this test. The fan is turned on and increased slowly to eventually reach top speed. Well, thats a fine howdy do. Seems the ducts are so leaky that the monometer will not even begin to provide a reading. This means that total duct leakage, both to the inside and to the outside, is off the charts. I see energy savings in this homes future.

By combining the blower door with the duct blaster, we can run a test that will separate out duct leakage to the inside from duct leakage to the outside. Just because we did not get a reading on total duct leakage does not mean we can not get a reading on duct leakage to the outside. The blower door fan is set on reverse so we can blow air into the house. The duct blaster is readjusted and bingo, a measure of duct leakage to the outside of the house measures 880 cfm. I can taste that clam chowder now. Nathan does away with his levis and sports a nifty pair of basketball shorts.

To continue our quest to locate the leak, we head down to the furnace and tape off the furnace filter and stick it back in the furnace. Now we can perform the duct blaster test again and test just the return air ducts for the leak. By taping off the furnace filter, we separated the return air ducts from the supply air ducts. We can now test them separately for leakage. Testing just the return duct, the duct blaster, once again indicated a leak so large that a measurement figure was not given. We left the duct blaster fan running and headed out to inspect the return air duct system with a fine tooth comb. It was not long before Jay, who had gone back into the attic, was setting off leftover fireworks. He knew how much I was looking forward to that clam chowder.

The return air duct went from the ceiling register to a metal box that sat over an open chase that went from the attic downward, behind the bathtub wall, to the basement, where it connected back up with the furnace. Most of the air from the duct blaster was coming back up into the attic from that open vertical wall space. The heating contactor, when the house was built, used the framing space behind the bathtub wall as a return air duct. He did this without sealing the top of the wall cavity or the plumbing access holes. So for years, the homeowners have been heating the attic and providing a warm place for a cat or two to build an ever expanding trail system. Bring on the Clams.

When we have a contractor seal the top of the chase around the metal return air box and stop the air from escaping to the attic, we will see the reward of a lower electric bill and a more efficient, comfortable home. Sealing a homes heating ducts is recognized as one of the most cost effective measures to a lower power bill. With the heating ducts performing like they should, I will recommend the addition of an efficient heat pump for this home. There is no use adding a heat pump and then just blowing your savings into the attic. Additional insulation will be recommended for the cat trails in the attic as well.

Ok, before I can wrap up Todays Power Trip and look a clam in the eye, let's take a look at this leaking return air duct and consider what is happening when the furnace is off. When the furnace is off, the duct acts like an open fireplace chimney. Warm air rises, so the warmer air in the house slowly rises up and finds its way into the return air duct and flows through the hole in the duct and into the attic. Warm attic means warm cat. When the furnace is on and the furnace fan is trying to bring air from the house back to the furnace so it can be reheated and returned to the house - what is actually happening is the furnace is bringing cold, moist, dirty cat hair from the attic, reheating it the best it can, and blowing it back into the house. The whole senareo points to one conclusion. Seal the duct.

It's time to head for some clam chowder - I feel like I have really earned it. The score is now one loss and two wins...

Whether it's a large commercial operation, or a weekend woodworker's garage-sized shop, dust collection is more than just a luxury. In this article, we'll discuss the importance of getting a handle on woodshop dust and help you get started designing dust control strategy that really works.

Why is Dust Collection Important?

Research continues into the health consequences of long-term exposure to workshop dust. In the debate over the seriousness of the health risks involved in exposure to wood dust, one thing seems to be universally accepted: the risks are real. A quick search of the internet will bring up hundreds of sources of information on the health consequences associated with woodshop dust exposure, including widely recognized organizations like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Here's an excerpt from its introduction to the topic of Wood Dust and Health:

"Wood dust becomes a potential health problem when wood particles from processes such as sanding and cutting become airborne. Breathing these particles may cause allergic respiratory symptoms, mucosal and nonallergic respiratory symptoms, and cancer..."

Woodshop dust and debris presents a physical danger as well. In many small shops, "dust collection" means breaking out a broom and dust pan for a few minutes at the end of the day. But during a work session, too many woodworkers routinely climb over piles of shavings kicked out by a thickness planer, or stand on a slippery, quarter-inch carpet of sawdust while they push the last couple of boards in a large stack through their table saw. But it only takes a second to slip or stumble over a pile of debris and end up with an injury that will keep them out of the shop for a long time.

Getting a Handle on Two Kinds of Dust

The dust that a wood shop produces can be divided into two general categories: Large dust particles, chips and shavings, and fine wood dust. These two kinds of "dust" each have their own negative effects on your woodworking operation, and each requires a different strategy for adequate control.

Collecting Large Chips and Shavings

By far, the largest volume of debris created in most wood shops falls under the large-particle dust, chips and shavings category. Most of the mountain of "dust" that collects under your table saw and behind your router table is actually composed of chips, shavings and dust particles that are too large and heavy to stay airborne for long. A dust collector is simply the only too capable of handling this large volume of debris.

A dust collection system works by capturing woodworking dust and debris in a stream of air and transporting it through the system's ductwork to a collection area. A dust collector uses a large induction motor to drive a special type of fan called an impeller. The dust collector's 1HP or greater motor and impeller type of fan are necessary in order to generate the large volume of air flow required to move the substantial amounts of dust and debris produced by woodworking equipment.

Choosing a Dust Collector

Choosing the right dust collector is a matter of sizing up you dust collection needs and buying a machine that's appropriate for the dimensions of your shop, the tools in your shop, and your woodworking habits.

Fortunately, you may not need the most powerful dust collector on the market. A small, portable dust collector is a good option if you work in a compact, solo shop and your priorities are affordability and simplicity. A portable dust collector is moved from machine to machine, and connected to the woodworking tool only when it is in use. This keeps it in close proximity of the tool, improving its ability to draw in large amounts of debris.

A large, powerful dust collector will, of course, move more air with more friction-overcoming force than a small, portable unit, and therefore can be used to service machinery that produces greater volumes of debris. Also, because of their greater capacity for overcoming internal resistance of the system, more powerful dust collectors can be situated farther away from individual machines, making them more advantageous for central dust collection systems.

Dealing with Fine Wood Dust

A dust collector alone is rarely sufficient protection against the dangers of dust. In reality, even the best dust collector can leave clouds of minute airborne dust particles floating through the air. To adequately control both huge volumes of large particle debris and the considerable amount of fine dust particles that woodworking machinery produces, it is almost always necessary to supplement your dust collector with an air filtration system.

An air filtration system really consists of little more than a fan and a set of filters that remove tiny particles of dust from the air in your shop. Many also feature a built-in timer that turns the unit off automatically after a period of time.

Choosing the appropriate system is similar to choosing the right dust collector. You'll need to consider the dimensions of your shop and pick a unit that's up to the task. To be effective, an air filtration device should be rated to cycle through the entire volume of air in your shop 6 to 8 times per hour.

Fortunately, air filtration systems are available for almost any size shop. Like dust collectors, the performance of an air filtration system is measured by the volume of air it will move in cubic feet per minute (cfm). Many popular air filtration systems for hobbyist shops are rated in the 1000 cfm range, which means that it will filter entire volume of air in a 20' X 20' shop more than 12 times per hour.

Before you finish this article you will know exactly how to build a grow box. Once you know how to build a grow box, you can take what you've learned and build a grow room. A grow room is simply a large grow box.

The first step to creating a grow room is a plan. Growing plants indoors can be tricky and you want to plan what you are going to use to achieve your goal. Without a plan you will build a random grow room built for just growing plants indoors.

Depending on the plant you are growing, you may want different things in your grow room. You will want to plan the type of hydroponics or drip system you are going to use. Draw out every component of your planned grow tent.

Start with the frame. How do you plan on creating a frame for your environment. You will want an enclosed chamber. Air tight and light tight are the goal. Water proofing is MANDATORY. Water proofing your grow roomset up will protect your house from taking heavy water damage and allow you to see any spills or leaks in your hydroponic system. Your frame will also need to support the weight of your grow light and the heavy hood that comes with it. You will also want to hang fans and filters from the frame so make sure you use a sturdy material.

Different materials will suit the needs of different growers. The grow closet in the pictures uses 1 inch or thicker PVC pipes for the frame. Wood and braces can construct a very sturdy grow box. If you are going to have a lot of weight hanging from the walls and ceiling, wood will be a good material choice for the frame. For PVC frames you will just use PVC joint connections to bring the pipes together. You can use PVC glue, epoxy, or industrial strength tape to secure the connections.

The walls are made of black and white poly. Black and white poly is similar to mylar on a roll but is usually cheaper. The black and white poly is overlapped at the connection points. Sewing the pieces of black and white poly and sealing them with duct tape seems to produce a decent seal at a very low cost.

Cheap hydroponic grow boxes are hard to find, but making your own can save you quite a bit of money for a sacrifice of time. You could also use a giant tarp to create the walls of the box, but black and white poly already reflects light.

Doors are a tricky part to building a grow room. This is where a good plan will come in handy. Building a wooden door is simple with the right tools. You can cut a square hole in a wooden board to create a door frame. Add hinges and a board that will cover the hole and you have a simple door.

To make a simple door in mylar or black and white poly you can get a tarp zipper. The tarp zipper is meant to be sewn to the right and left sides of where the door is supposed to be. To open the door you simply unzip the zipper.

Once you build your grow room, you will need to ventilate it and create air circulation. Powerful inline fans can push air through ventilated grow light hoods and air filters. If your grow room is air tight, an exhaust fan should create negative pressure, drawing air from any cracks or holes in the walls. Its important to draw the air out of the room by pulling air through filters before it enters or exits the grow space.

Carbon filters will remove any odors before they leave your grow room. HEPA filters will filter out dust, pests, and mold through your intake fan. Small grow tents will not require an intake fan if the temperature is low enough. A good rule of thumb is a 4:1 exhaust/intake ratio. That means 400 CFM(cubic feet per minute) exhaust for every 100 CFM intake.

Next hang your grow lights and the necessary accessories. Hang your thermometers and preventative pest control gear. You should be nearing the completion of your grow closet. You will have to make a few minor tweaks to get exactly what you want.

TIP: Run all of your electrical components to the outside of your grow tent. Make a small hole for plugs to get to the outer environment. If your cords do not reach from the inside of your grow room to the outside, you can run them to the top of the frame. Secure a surge protector up on the wall so that it cannot be possibly touched by water. If you're new to indoor gardening and are designing a grow room, you need to plan for air-cooling your lights to maintain proper temperatures, humidity levels, and air exchange. Although there are many configurations, it basically comes down to bringing cool air into your grow area and ducting the hot air outside.

Since warm air rises, you'll want to draw cool air in at the lowest point of your garden. You can do this passively with vents or you can use blowers that actively push fresh air into your grow room.

Next, you'll want to use an inline fan to cool the lights themselves. I like Vortex as they're quiet compared to other centrifugal fans.

These fans are rated based on how many cubic feet per minute (CFM) they can move at a certain pressure. In order to figure out how many CFMs will be necessary to cool your lights, start by figuring out the total volume of your grow room. This is done by measuring length x width x height in feet.

Now that you know the total volume of your grow room, you'll want to choose a fan that's capable of exchanging 100% of the air in less than five minutes. For example, I grow in a 4 x 4 Sun Hut, which is seven feet tall. The tent is actually 4.5 x 4.5 even though they call it 4 x 4. As a result, I multiply 4.5 x 4.5 x 7 which gives me 141.75, rounded up to 142 cubic feet. The Vortex 4 inch is rated at 172 CFM which means I can expect 100% air exchange in under a minute. Let's say you have a bigger grow room that measures 1000 cubic feet, you'd need a fan rated at 200 CFM or higher (200 x 5 minutes=1000).

Once you've chosen an inline fan, it's time to hook it up. Attach ducting to your reflector/hood and then attach the other end to the fan. Next, attach ducting to the other side of your fan and run it outside through your window. In this way, you'll be using your fan to pull heat off of the bulb to duct it outside.

It's important to use as little ducting as possible and to keep it as straight as you can. There will always be air resistance as a result of using the ducting which means it will warm up. If you have extra ducting you'll just be adding heat to your grow room. Also, having a bunch of curves along the way adds to the air resistance which diminishes efficiency.

Setting up this drill is very simple, you will need five markers placed about a foot apart in an x formation with one of the dots being in the center surrounded by four other dots in a square formation.

The athlete starts at the edge of the mat placing their feet on two of the outer dots and proceeds to jump with feet together on the center spot and then out again quickly to the outer dots similar to a simple hop scotch motion. How to Prepare and Insulate Your Own Attic

How to air seal and insulate your attic so your home does not lose all the heat it needs to keep you warm this winter. Getting your attic up-to-speed with insulation is one of the most cost effect measures to help your home be more energy efficient.

Going to the attic usually means one of three things.

1. Your 10 years old and playing hide-and-seek.

2. Your 32 years old and you have one more valuable heirloom to store away for ever.

3. Your 54 years old and you've noticed a wet spot on the ceiling and you're afraid the roof is leaking.

All these are good reasons to enter the attic, but for now, let's enter the attic to look at the insulation and determine if adding more insulation would be a good - house warming - lower the power bill - thing to do.

Building codes effecting insulation levels did not really start to take affect until the early 1980's. If your home was built prior to 1984, there is a pretty good chance that your attic has minimal attic insulation. Builders in the 1940's did not insulate much of anything, builders in the 1960's filled the space between the roof rafters with about 4 inches of insulation. Builders in the 1990's installed 8 inches ( R-25 to R-30 ) of loose-fill fiberglass insulation and by the year 2000, insulation levels had reached 12 inches ( R-38 ). Today, depending on the homes location, attics are being insulated with 16 inches of blown-in fiberglass ( R-49 ), cellulose, or shredded blue jeans.

Yes, shredded blue jeans, I'm serious, the ripped up blue jeans were being installed in a wall as insulation.

Attic insulation is energy efficient if you live in a cold climate and you're trying to keep the warm in and the cold out, or if you live in a warm climate and you're trying to keep the cold in and the warm out.

Dark colored, metal fiber appearing insulation is probably rock wool. A popular attic insulation in the 50's and 60's. Fairly effective and not a health hazard. However, insulation granules that are roughly ¼ inch square that feel like Styrofoam and contrast from mirror shiny to dark in color might be vermiculite asbestos. This is bad stuff because of the asbestos content. My advise to attics with vermiculite is to have it professionally removed. Do not handle or disturb this insulation without the direction of a professional contractor.

Tip - Don't mess with knob and tube wiring and don't handle vermiculite. Call a pro.

If your home was built prior to 1940, you need to be aware of knob and tube wiring. This is clothed bound wiring that is attached to ceramic knobs as it runs over wood framing structures or runs through ceramic tubes when the wire runs through holes in the framing or building material. This type of wiring will need to be replaced by new electrical wiring by an electrician before insulating. If you insulate directly over knob and tube wiring, the wire can heat up and create a fire danger.

One more thing, watch where you step when in the attic, only step on the truss or rafter framing lumber. If you step between the framing members you are likely to stick your leg through the ceiling and have one ugly hole to patch and one heck of a mess to clean up before the little women gets home.

Tip - to provide a place to put your feet while you work on sealing the attic floor, take a piece of plywood into the attic that will reach over several rafters.

Tools and materials needed:

1. Basic face mask and light coveralls. Cloth or leather gloves and eye protection.

2. Drop light so you can see what you're doing and where you're going.

Tip - miner style head lights work good here.

3. If you have a flue or chimney running up through your attic, or recessed lights or ceiling fans, you will need a small roll of light weight metal flashing, 18 to 24 inches wide. One pair of tin shears.

4. Can of insulating expanding spray foam.

5. Tube of inexpensive general purpose caulk and a caulk gun. If you have gas appliances, also pick up a tube of high temperature caulk.

6. Cardboard vent chutesfor placing between the roof trusses at the same location as each eve vent or bird block. Count how many you will need by counting the number of eve or soffit vents from outside the home. The easiest tool to install the chutes is with a squeeze or tacker stapler.

7. Extra cardboard to use as barriers to separate areas where you do not want insulation.

8. 1/4 inch, #6 sheetmetal screws and a cordless drill.

Tip - get self starting and threading screws.

How to prepare the attic before installing insulation:

1. Remove the items you have stored in the attic that have been placed over the heated area of your home where you are going to insulate. Items stored over the garage can stay. Boards that have been placed in the attic to store items on also need to be removed.

Tip - Have a garage sale.

2. Take the vent chutes and the tacker stapler and install a chute at each location where there is an eve vent. Fit the chute so insulation can not block the vent and a flow of air can move from the outside, through the eve vent, up through the chute and out into the attic. Attic ventilation is important for the health of your attic.

3. With pieces cut from the roll of metal flashing and the high temperature caulk, seal around the flue pipe where the pipe comes through the ceiling. Cut a half circular pattern from the edge of the metal and install around the pipe like a collar, screw in place using the sheet metal screws by screwing through tabs bent up on the sides of the metal and screwing into the framing members of the truss. Place one half collar on one side of the pipe and a half collar on the other. Caulk the space between the flashing and the pipe with the high temperature caulk.

Tip - when working with the thin metal, wear gloves to avoid getting cut by the metal.

4. Now take the metal flashing and the tin shears and form a cylinder around the flue pipes and masonry chimneys and anything else that carries hot combustion gases. There should be a two inch air space between the hot flue and the new sheet metal insulation barrier. Use the sheet metal screws to hold in place. These cylinders should look like extra tall turtle neck sweaters on a metal neck.

5. If you have recessed lighting or canned lights ( same thing), locate them in your attic. Older canned lights that you cannot cover with insulation will not be IC rated. IC stands for Insulated Ceiling. The IC rating should be clearly indicated on the label attached to the back of the light. Do not confuse a UL rating ( Underwriters Laboratory ) with the IC rating. They are not the same thing. A UL rating means the canned light has a cutoff switch installed that will turn the light off if it gets too hot. An IC rating means it is safe to cover the canned light with insulation. Air space between the IC rated light and insulation is not needed.

Tip - Now would be a good time to upgrade the recessed lights to sealed cans and IC rated.

If the canned light is IC rated, seal the light where it comes through the ceiling with general purpose caulk - your ready to install insulation over the light.

If the canned light is not IC rated, seal the light where it comes through the ceiling and any holes in the light body with high temperature caulk. Form a cylinder with the metal flashing and place it around the light body like you would a flue pipe leaving a two inch air space. Hold it in place with the sheet metal screws. This should look like a gardener that puts an open end bucket over his young tomato plants so they are protected from the cold. The plant is the can light and the bucket is the sheet metal.

6. Locate any exhaust fans, there could be none, one or more. The fans should have a ridged or flexable round duct running from the fan to an exhaust point that puts the exhausted air outside and not in the attic. Use the all purpose caulk or the foam spray to seal the fan body at the ceiling. Use the caulk to seal the holes in the fan body. Be sure the duct is exhausting to an eve vent or a roof peak vent. Use the metal flashing and the foam spray to seal the exhaust duct to the eve or roof vent. Support the duct with wire or plastic ties to be sure that the duct does not fall down over time. An exhaust fan has a one way flapper valve in the exhaust fan body just before it attaches to the duct. Given the chance, inspect the flapper valve and make sure lint, dust, hair, moisture and gunk has not left the valve stuck open or glued shut. The flapper valve is a back flow restrictor, keeping cold or warm air from coming back down the duct into your house.

Tip- Now would be a good time to replaced older noisy exhaust fans. I recommend an exhaust fan rated at 100 cfm (cubic feet per minute ) or more and on the quiet side.

7. Now take the can of spray foam and apply foam to every hole where an electric wire, T.V. wire, or telephone wire enters or leaves the attic. Do the same for the plumbing pipes. There should be vent pipes running up from the attic floor and out the roof. Foam where the pipe comes through the attic floor. Do not foam where the pipe goes through the roof.

8. Some homes, both older homes and newer, may have open framing spaces that run from the attic floor down to the floor below. These are spaces that result from unneeded space at the end of bathtubs or closets. They maybe the result of irregular framing such as a triangle formed where a closet meets a hallway that meets a bedroom door. These open chases need to be sealed with more than just insulation. Take a piece of cardboard, cut it to fit over the opening, lay a bead of all purpose caulk around the lip of the opening, lay the cardboard on top the the caulk and screw down with the sheet metal screws. Now you simply insulate over the cardboard.

Ready to insulate

Tools and Materials Needed.

1. Tape measured- for calculating the square footage in your attic and for marking cardboard strips with the depth of insulation you want to add.

2. Insulation - fiberglass is a glass product, cellulose is a paper product. Either one is good.

Tip - fiberglass is itchy, cellulose not so much.

3. Insulation blower - Large hardware and building stores will have a blower you can use if you buy the insulation from them. Don't forget to call ahead and reserve the machine. The blower comes with about 2 miles of hose.

4. Utility knife - for cutting open the packages of insulation.

5. Attic access tent- This is a rarely new item for insulating over the attic access opening after you have insulated the rest of the attic.

6. 1/4 inch self adhering foam weatherstripping. Small roll about 12 feet long.

7. Gate latch - two small gate latches for holding the access lid down.

8. One friend - flip a coin, one person to spray the insulation in the attic and one person to feed the machine in the garage or back yard etc.

Take the tape and measure the length and width of the attic space. This can usually be done from outside the house by walking around on the lawn instead of in the attic walking around on narrow trusses. Plug the numbers into a calculator with a multiplication sign between them and calculate how many square feet are in your attic.

Take a trip down to your favorite hardware store and head for the insulation department. The bags of insulation for loose fill or blown in insulation will be square compressed packages. Grab a package and read how much insulation is in the package at a certain thickness or depth. The chart on the package will allow you to calculate how many packages of insulation you will need if your attic is so many square feet and you want to add so much R-value. For instance, one package will cover 100 square feet at R-16, 56 square feet at R-30, and 32 sq feet at R-49.

Tip - purchase a bundle or two extra, once you start blowing insulation you don't want to stop to go get one more bundle.

Load up the blower and the insulation in the back of the pickup and head home for a great, energy saving day.

Set the blower in a handy location. You will need to plug the machine in to an electric outlet, feed it with bundles of insulation, and run the hose from the machine to the attic. Tack up a few of the cardboard depth indicating strips that you made so you have a target depth to aim for. Start in a back corner and work your way to the attic access opening. Spray the insulation from the hose in a sweeping motion that allows the insulation to fall on your attic floor like a fine light snow. Fill one section of attic to the intended depth before moving on to the next section. Be careful not to direct the flying insulation into the eve chutes or inside the cylinder barriers.

Tip - If your attic has an electrical junction box or some other fixed item that will be hard to find once covered with 16 inches of insulation, mark it's location by writing on a piece of cardboard and stapling the sign above the item on a roof rafter with an arrow pointing the way.

Fill the entire attic with nice new insulation to an even thickness indicated by the cardboard depth measuring strips placed effectively around the attic. Once you have all the attic filled except just the area around the attic access opening, stop for a moment, take some cardboard, and install an insulation barrier around the opening. Now you can add insulation to the proper depth right up to the opening.

Tip - Plan ahead so the hose and the blower hopper is not full of insulation when you are finished and need to take the hose off the machine.

Hey, you're almost done.

1. Spread the attic access tent over the opening.

2. Attach the 1/4 inch self adhering weatherstripping to the contact perimeter of the lid that fits into and covers the access opening.

3. Install the hatch latch clips, one on each side of the lid in such a manner that when the latch is fastened, it pulls down on the lid and compresses the weatherstripping so the lid is air tight.

4. Load up the extra bundles of insulation and the blower and return to the store.

There is bound to be a light sprinkling of insulation under the access opening and around the area where the blower was located. Brooms do not work real well on insulation in grass or carpet. Grab the vacuum cleaner and don't stop until your sure you won't need to sleep on the couch.

General rule of thumb: 400CFM exhaust to 100CFM intake. Play with these numbers to see how the temperatures and air flow change. I suggest hanging digital thermometers in various locations and heights in the grow room.

Let's face it, moisture has always been inside our homes, and it will always be there as long as we cook and bath in our homes. When houses were "loose" (drafty and not insulated well) we had an abundance of air changes per day, so indoor pollutants and interior moisture levels were not a concern. As houses are constructed tighter and tighter and every void is now filled with insulation, indoor air quality and mold issues have risen to problem level. Something as simple as cooking pasta or making homemade soup can and does add a lot of moisture into a home environment. A quick and simple solution for kitchen moisture is to always run your kitchen exhaust fan when you are cooking, and make sure it is vented to the outside and does not just recirculate the air.

We are going to focus this article on bathroom moisture and how to reduce it correctly. The greatest aid in removing moisture from the bathroom is the exhaust fan; although, if the exhaust fan is not used and sized correctly it will have less than the optimum effect. One of the ratings on exhaust fans is CFM, "cubic feet per minute" of air displacement. This number is critical to the proper sizing of your fan. To help you properly size the fan to your bathroom lets me introduce you to a formula that is used to calculate the correct size of fan needed. That formula is W x L x H x 8 ACH = CFH then divide by 60m to get CFM. (Cubic feet per minute is width x length x height x 8 air changes an hour = cubic feet per hour /60 minutes to get cubic feet per minute). If you are installing a fan in an enclosed toilet room then consider a vertical mount position on a wall next to the toilet. If you are going to do this then make sure your fan is approved for vertical installation and that the required exhaust duct will fit in the existing wall cavity. If you are installing in a combination bathroom, toilet and tub/shower in the same room then a ceiling mount is the standard method of installation. When installing the fan in the ceiling do not place it to close to the tub or you could create a draft situation. The goal here is to capture the warm moist air as it is naturally displaced by the water from the shower and not create a vacuum where air is literally sucked out of the shower area. Remember any air traveling over wet skin will feel cool.

A point to remember is, as air is removed from the room new air must flow into the room, typically from under a door or from other openings. The discussion of negative pressure situations is a discussion for another article. Experts agree that leaving the fan run for 20 minutes after the water is turned off is sufficient time to remove the excess moisture from the room. Another way to determine if the moisture is gone from the room is when the steam is gone from the bathroom mirror.

If you are installing a new exhaust fan that is a combination unit containing a light you should install a separate switch to operate just the fan portion, so that you can leave it on without leaving a light on. When venting your fan, make sure you vent it to the outside, not into an attic space or you will just be moving the moisture problem from the bathroom to the attic where it can be just as troublesome. Removing moisture is an important part to a healthy home environment.
